Thailand

Thailand proudly considers itself the “Land of the Free” and provides a high quality of life for its people. However, just one percent of the population consider themselves Christian.

Thailand is a fertile and well-watered land bordering on Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. As the only country in South East Asia never to be colonised by a European power, Thailand is proud to be known as the “Land of the Free”. The country is a constitutional monarchy, and King Rama IX, the 9th king of the House of Chakri, has reigned since 1946.

About 75% of the population is Thai, 14% Chinese and 3% Malay; the rest belong to minority groups including Mons, Khmers and various hill tribes. While the main religion is Buddhism (93%), 1% consider themselves Christian (0,7% Evangelical).

OM THAILAND

OM Thailand’s goal is to develop future workers and leaders among the youth and young adults to serve in the church at home and overseas. This is achieved through English camps, university ministry, outreach programmes, discipleship training, church partnership and church planting.

MTI THAILAND

Mercy Teams International (MTI) runs a school of mercy, residential care home, border community church and medical and dental clinic for the Mon and Karen people in a village on the Thai-Burma border.

The School of Mercy (Grades 1-7) provides about 110 students, who would otherwise have no access to education, with a Burmese education which emphasises Christian principles, including discipleship classes for older children. Shortly after starting the school, a residential home was established to serve as a safe place for students who were found sleeping under the trees in the jungle because the distance between their homes and the school was too great to travel each day. A medical and dental clinic provides health care to IDP’s (internally displaced peoples) and students and villagers in the surrounding area. MTI has also built a small village church and despite opposition, numerous families have come to faith.

ACT THAILAND

Asia Challenge Teams (ACT) has been working in Asia for more than 20 years. Participants typically join ACT for one or two years, spending at least 6 months in one location in South East Asia at a time. Through exposure to diverse cultures, languages and peoples, team members discover their gifts, abilities and interests on the mission field.

Pray for Thailand

Thank You for the fertile, well-watered and beautiful country of Thailand, which means "Land of the Free" and is also called "Land of the Smiles". Thank You that Your church is steadily growing and slowly reaching missiological maturity. We pray that Your freedom can be experienced by more and more of the Thai people and overcome the power of Buddhism. We pray that soon the entire nation can smile because of the life and joy You have breathed into it.
