Loving the 'Least of These'
by Kaitlynn Kopeski
Usaid* is somewhere between the ages of 10 and 12. He doesn't know when his birthday is, nor had he ever used a toothbrush before Jared* brought him into his own home.
Usaid is one of the many thousands of Turkish Kurds who live in Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria. Before Usaid met Jared, he spent his days on the streets, begging and selling.
One day, he approached the area where Jared was handing out Bibles. Jared gave him some food and water. He continued to visit Jared everyday, and soon Jared began to teach him Arabic. Now Usaid even helps Jared distribute literature, along with the help of other Turkish children.
Usaid lives in an abusive home; he doesn't go to school. His job is to bring money home to the family. There are 14 people living in Usaid's house, which consists of two rooms and no bathroom.
Usaid's situation is tragic, yet common among the Turkish children. Jared now helps the family each month so Usaid can stop begging on the streets. Instead, Usaid goes with Jared to evangelize and Jared continues to teach him Arabic.
Jared’s prayer is for Usaid to live in a safe home and start school next year.
“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40
