Never Have Low Expectations
South Africa | OM International
A group of OMers left the office in Pretoria to visit one of the Ultimate Goal Challenge teams in Bosmont. Their hope was to take some pictures while the outreach participants were busy visiting people at their homes in a nearby community. The day, however, developed in a way that amazed and surprised them. On their way back to Pretoria they couldn't help themselves but to praise God.
The light for the photography was crisp and warm and the kids on the street were happy to be a part of the session. Team Ghana split into smaller groups and apparently they had a wonderful time of meeting God and people in this neglected, industrial area. Mpumi, Stefan and Weronika were standing on the street corner, chatting with the pastor and watching the group from a distance. The camera was already packed into the car, the job was done.
Suddenly an elderly man walked out of one of the apartments on the first floor and started waving at them. “Come to my house!” he shouted. As the OMers rushed up the stairs, they whispered a quick prayer. The whole family gathered inside a tiny living room: an elderly uncle, a disabled young man and his mom, who kept repeating “Nobody should let the Word of God pass by your door”. The lady shared some of the family's struggles: she had cancer; her son recently quit his drug habit. She admitted that she stopped going to church few years ago, but somehow God started to work in her life again. The conversation was long and filled with Bible verses. The right words just flew out of Mpumi's mouth. The meeting ended with a prayer of reconciliation to God. The woman expressed her gratitude the best she could, sending a little girl to fetch a bottle of cold drink for the visitors.
This wasn't the end, though! After saying their goodbyes to the team, the OMers stopped on the road to grab something to eat. The owner of the place was a very friendly Muslim man. It was he who started a conversation about faith and he seemed very surprised that those Christian missionaries didn't try to convert him, but rather answered his questions with love. He gladly accepted a prayer at the end of their visit.
What do you expect from God today? Do you just hope to get the job done?
