Freed to Serve
Nepal | OM International
I have had two masters in my life. The first was drugs that made me a slave. The second was the God who set me free to be a servant.
My whole family is Christian, and I believed as a child, but when I grew older I kept bad company and used drugs. I tried many things to clean up my life, went to rehab, and even ran away to India to escape from my life, but nothing could break the power the drugs had over me. My brother was also an addict, but my parents sent him to an outreach course offered by OM Nepal. As he studied the Bible and shared his faith with others, my brother found freedom from the drugs, and his life was changed forever.
I had already tried everything else, and when I saw the freedom my brother found, I decided to go to the same training course. At first it was very difficult for me. I was sick often and wanted to leave, but the teachers encouraged me to persevere. I never used drugs again. More than that, I saw God work through me. At the end of the three months I decided to continue on with OM’s one-year training program.
During my training time I participated in many village outreaches in remote areas. During one of these times I experienced God’s power work through me so dramatically that I surrendered the rest of my life to His control. I was leading an outreach team, and we came to a village with many believers. They asked us to pray for two women who were demon-possessed. We were all afraid to pray for them, because we didn’t know how, but as the team leader, I began to pray. The Christians called together many people from the village to see what would happen. As I prayed, the demons began to attack me. I felt someone choking me and trying to make me fall. I prayed, “Lord we are coming here to pray and the villagers think that we can heal. Lord, please help me – if I fall down the villagers will laugh.” As I continued to pray, I asked for forgiveness for any sins in my life, and suddenly I felt released. Nothing was choking me and I could speak again.
My outreach team prayed all night that night, but still we couldn’t cast out the demons. We decided that instead of preaching in the village, we would fast, pray, and read our Bibles. After four days, the demons cried out, “We don’t want to stay, let us go,” and they left the women. The villagers were overwhelmed, and twenty-five people accepted Christ as a result of God’s power working through us.
From that day on my life has been different. I had seen God break the hold of drugs on my life, the hold of demons on the women, and the hold of darkness on that village. I committed my life to serving the God who is powerful enough to free people from every form of bondage.
I completed my training and worked for several years as an evangelist. Now I work with the Nepal Bible Society and in the evenings I pray for the sick and demon-possessed. I still minister in villages in remote areas of Nepal whenever I can. I believe that if God had not shown His power and mercy in my life, I would have died as a drug addict. I praise God that He is using me to set other people free and make them His servants.
