Food for the Hungry

OM International

The neighbourhood is called “Las Violetas” - Violets - but it’s one of the toughest areas in Cordoba, Argentina. Taxi drivers refuse to take their vehicles within its boundaries. And few would contemplate walking the streets after dark, when crime, violence, and drug abuse reign supreme.  Adding to the criminality is desperate poverty. According to statistics, approximately every second person in Argentina lives below the UN’s official poverty line. That means they survive on less than a Euro per day, if that. But there is hope.

Over the last ten years, Sandra Acosta and several other OM workers have faithfully offered food to the hungry in Las Violetas. In one kindergarten they have fed children three meals a day, six days a week. Besides meals the children receive medical help and social therapy with toys and games, helping them adjust to society. Recently, team members saw the need to reach out to the elderly as well, since most suffer from inadequate pensions.  Thanks to their action at least twenty old folks are now able to eat a good meal each day. Such practical demonstrations of Jesus’ love have opened hearts in Cordoba, and some have responded to the gospel.
