Ministry to Women

Everyday, in many places around world, women are marginalized and abused. Some are subjected to horrors such as honor killings, wife beatings, childhood marriages, sex trafficking, temple prostitution and dowry crimes. For many, life is a daily struggle to survive without any hope for the future.

It’s in this context that a number of OM ministries are working to bring spiritual, emotional and physical healing to some of the world’s most underprivileged and undervalued women.

In holistic and culturally sensitive ways, OM ministries to women are bringing a message of love and of hope for the future in the person of Jesus Christ. Each ministry seeks to uniquely meet the heartfelt needs of the women in their individual circumstances in practical ways, such as: health projects, community development, education, skills training, micro-development, friendship, employment, and relief among the poor. Although each project is different, they all share a common desire to see each woman come to know that she is a precious child of God who is dearly loved by Him and by His people.

Testimonies fron Ministry to Women

It’s another Saturday night on the streets of Vienna. It’s late, and it’s cold. The streets are lined with women selling sex. The image of God stands broken as these ladies from Eastern Europe, victims of female trafficking, the property of pimps, sell themselves. They are not there by choice but as a result of the lies and manipulations of others. We offer them candy and a book. The girls smile warmly and thank us. One asks who is paying us to come out here and why are we doing it. When Elke gives them a flower and tells them that today is international women’s day, more than one woman gives a loud belly laugh and gratefully takes the flower. As one lady tells us, to be out here and doing what they are doing means that they truly are second-class citizens. They gratefully receive a book. One woman says she can’t take a Gospel because it would hurt her heart too much. At this stage, the ladies I am with are living gospels to these girls, building trusting relationships, showing the love and respect that Christ has for them.

A team working in a slum community in India runs sewing classes several evenings a week for girls ages 13 to 21. Sixteen girls attend these classes. They work as housemaids during the day, starting as early as 6:30 a.m., and come directly from work to their tailoring classes.

Despite being tired, these young women are grateful for the opportunity to learn a new skill, and they never miss a class. During class, the team also takes time to read from the Bible and pray for the women. Many of them come from troubled homes and are grateful for the opportunity to share their concerns and have someone pray for them.
