Participants will be working on the service team at the camps. The work is mainly centered around the kitchen and includes cleaning, food preparation, and serving. Participants will also be able to spend time talking and getting to know Greeks at the camp. The camp runs from August 5 to 12. Participants will be required to arrive two weeks before the camp begins in order to get a Food Handler's Certification. During this time, participants will volunteer with our refugee ministries.
Participants must be flexible. Ministry in Greece is constantly changing, and volunteers must be able to adapt.
Volunteers will stay at an OM apartment, local church dorms, or a local hotel before the camp. Volunteers will stay in dorm-like accommodation at the camp. We cannot guarantee that married couples will be housed together. Volunteers should expect to have roommates. Volunteers may be required to climb several flights of stairs if a lift is unavailable. If special accommodation is required, please inquire with the STM coordinator.
Before the camp, individuals will be responsible for purchasing their own groceries and preparing their own meals. They will have access to a full kitchen in their accommodation.
Other arrangements will be made for teams, as they will not have access to a kitchen in their accommodation.
At the camp, all volunteers will eat with the camp participants.
Participants are responsible for arranging their travel to and from Athens International Airport. The airport code is “ATH.” They should arrive between 9:00 and 21:00 on the scheduled arrival day. Participants will need use public transportation (metro or bus) to get to Athens. However, if OM staff are available, they may be picked up from the airport. Groups should arrive and depart together.
Travel with public transportation is not included in the budget.
Please See "Travel".
Participants must be in good health and physically able to stand, bend, lift, walk, and do other physical activity as needed. Athens is a large city and volunteers must be able to walk long distances and climb hills/stairs. The work at the camp can be strenuous. Participants must be able to get a Food Handler's Certification in Greece. Volunteers will be required to give a stool sample to a local pathologist, and must have a chest X-ray done, in order to be certified.
