Simply Obedient

Druze womanMichael and Sarah were surprised when they both felt called to become missionaries "somewhere in our 50s." In an act of obedience, they moved from the States to the Middle East to host and direct short-term mission teams.

One particular medical team held a one-day medical clinic in a small village. Much of the surrounding area was populated by Druze, a small, close-knit religious offshoot of Islam. Few Druze have ever accepted Christ.

Hundreds of families showed up as word of the clinic spread. Michael, Sarah and the translators were overwhelmed but excited. Throughout the long day, they saw patients, prayed with families and gave medication. Late in the day, the last family stepped in to be seen. White headscarves covered the women, an outward sign that they were Druze.

The family invited Michael and Sarah to their home in a traditional act of Arab hospitality. The couple received many invitations that day, but Sarah remembers that "there was something about this Druze family. I just knew we had to visit them."

Shortly after the medical team returned home, Michael and Sarah prayed and then drove to the small Druze village. They were welcomed with hugs and plenty of classic Middle Eastern hot tea, extra sweet. As the conversation turned to religion, it became apparent that this family already knew a lot about Christianity. They received Christian radio broadcasts from another country and had been listening to them for over 20 years. Michael says with a smile, "they could complete the last part of every Bible verse I shared with them!" Truly, the field was ripe for harvest in this home as one of the daughters asked how to pray to accept Christ into her heart. With joy, Michael and Sarah led the entire Druze family to the Lord that afternoon.

Michael and Sarah are quick to say that they were simply obedient in being where God called them to be. They continue to follow up with the Druze family, and they pray that this family is the beginning of a rich harvest among the Druze in their remote village.
