Andrea had a career in Information Technology (IT) but her heart was on the soccer field. She had learned about sports ministry on a short-term mission trip and was hooked. Back home in the States, she got her coaching certification, then moved to eastern Europe to coach.
In the first months, Andrea put her IT skills to use serving local churches by designing web sites for them. As she learned more about the culture, she realized that girls actually had more opportunities for sports under Soviet rule than they do now. So she organized teams for women's soccer and girls' floorball (a type of indoor hockey). Each practice includes a weekly Bible lesson.
"The Lord has taught me a lot about myself through competitive games," says Andrea, "and they are a perfect place to put what the Lord teaches into practice." It has certainly been a way for her to act on her own faith. Andrea has no regrets about her move or career choice. When asked how long she plans to stay in the country, Andrea smiles, "I'm here until God clearly calls me some place else!"
