DIY Crate Bunk Beds to Haiti

OM staffer Ray Cooper had been to Haiti and knew orphans were sleeping on cardboard mats since the earthquake months before. When he heard OM was shipping a container of supplies to Haiti, he wondered if the packing crates could be turned into bunk beds. So fellow US team member Randy Jury began to design these reusable crates. Randy, Ray, and their crew built 25 crate bunks -- that’s 50 new beds for orphaned kids in Haiti. The measurements fit mattresses being made in Haiti, and the bunks were painted using supplies bought in country. Nearly one ton of sheets and blankets were included in the 40-foot container filled with supplies.  Each crate in the shipment took 2-3 hours to construct but only 20-30 minutes to reassemble as a bunk bed.

Most of the beds went to orphans in Cap Haiten, a city to the north where many children had no bed to sleep in at all. Local churches there were very grateful for the supplies they received to help minister to displaced people. The remaining supplies, as well as a few of the beds, went to Port au Prince in the south.

Please continue to pray for orphans in Haiti.
