A Tale of Two Chiles

In parts of Chile, life goes on. The February 8.8 earthquake and following tsunami left their mark but many have recovered. In the city of Concepción the disaster is a recent memory. While there, OM Chile director Carlos Correa learned, “We are living in two different Chiles: one that is moving forward and has forgotten about February 27, and a second that is still struggling physically, emotionally and spiritually with the consequences of the earthquake. Some people don’t dare to come near the beach because they fear another tsunami.”

Correa was meeting with local pastors who had lost their church buildings. OM is helping them rebuild. The team is also partnering with churches to rebuild houses. And ministry continues in two children’s homes. “This made a big impact on the children,” says OM team member Lise Tromop. “We were able to play with them, to distract them and also draw with them and let them speak about their experiences.” The team has since started a garden project for the kids, with the help of a few teenagers.
