Reaching out in Bangladesh

Bangladesh schoolIt is shivering cold at the unheated center in Bangladesh, but workers keep going, knowing that below-freezing temps are even worse for villagers father out. Many live in tin or bamboo huts, some even in the streets. It is thankfully a short winter, only a few weeks, but enough to emphasize the needs of those living in poverty.

No matter the weather, the team here is reaching out to this impoverished community, offering tools to help people provide for their families. Sewing classes give women an honorable and marketable skill. Men can learn tailoring, too, or how to wire houses. Literacy classes empower both men and women in their daily lives. It is tough – men often arrive at class after a full day's work and are exhausted. But their desire for knowledge drives them to continue.

For those who can already read, the team hands out literature. And this act is not only encouraging for those receiving it, but for the team as well. One leader writes, "We hope that as we distribute books and share with people, we will also build a sense of God's love for His world into the lives of our workers." It is a blessing to see the Lord transforming lives in such remote places.

In the same area, the team has initiated a "starter" school, a widely-used model in Bangladesh. It's for kids 7-9 years old who have never been to school. Mostly girls, the thirty students are on track to enter public schools within three years. This is a help for families, and a great opportunity for the children. Four more schools are planned and the team is currently looking for qualified teachers.

Also available is a Sports Camp, training believers to become sports trainers for local kids' teams. Potential trainers go through an intensive discipleship course, in hopes of affecting the lives of their players for Christ. The camp culminates in a Kidz Games Jamboree event at a village school where the OM team already works.

The ministries are as diverse as the people living here, but they all have a single aim: to deliver families here from the despair of poverty. You can join the team in Bangladesh or see other opportunities below and help transform communities in Asia.
